The History of yearly farming in Blueberry
The blueberry business kept us very busy year round. The blueberries were grown in Alma, Georgia. The berries were picked between the middle of April to the middle of July (depending on the type of berries).
The berries are picked by a harvester, which is driven over the bushes - the “arms” shake the bushes and the berries fall on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the berries to lugs. The berries are put in a refrigeration unit and transported to the pack house where they are placed on a conveyor belt and all the leaves, branches and other twigs are blown out and only the perfect berries are packed and shipped out.
The fundraiser berries were picked and packed the same way. Then berries were delivered to fundraiser groups.
